Why RJ Harvey wanted Broncos to draft him

The Denver Broncos may have landed a gem when they used a second-round pick to select UCF running back RJ Harvey in this year’s NFL draft.

Harvey looked sharp at rookie minicamp earlier this month, and he’s now set to report for organized team activities next week. Incoming rookies obviously don’t get to pick their teams in the draft, but Harvey specifically wanted to land in Denver. Why?

“Bo Nix,” Harvey said on May 10. “I love how he plays. I feel like this is a great team, had a great year last year, a young team, great defense… I’m just ready to get to work with all the vets.”

Yet another example of Nix making the Broncos a desirable destination. It also doesn’t hurt that the Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL last season.

Meanwhile, Harvey said he was getting adjusted to the high elevation at rookie camp, but he expects to be fully adjusted by the time OTAs begin next week.

“It’s been a little tough, but I’ve been getting through it,” Harvey said. “Everybody has said it’ll take about a week or two to get used to it, so I’ll be fine.”

Harvey, a former high school quarterback, will hit the field with Nix and the rest of his new teammates on May 27.

“I feel like playing quarterback has given me an advantage with my vision,” Harvey said of his QB background helping him today. “I know what to expect. I can see what the defense is doing, so it’s given me an advantage.”

Harvey is the clear favorite to serve as Denver’s starting running back this fall, but he’ll have to earn the role this summer. The work has already begun, and Harvey’s well on his way to an RB1 role.
