Nestled in the heart of midtown Atlanta, Savannah College of Art and Design held a weekend of activities highlighting why its fashion students are in a league of their own. On Friday evening, 170 looks constructed by 53 student designers across the school’s Savannah and Atlanta campuses strutted down the runway, signaling a bright future for the fashion industry’s upcoming generation.
As the sun set on ATL, the annual fashion extravaganza kicked off with a performance of Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 14” and a classical arrangement of Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” by cellist Wayne Bucknor Jr. and pianists Maxwell Park, Kim Steiner and Aaron Lehrian. Backstage, Tatcha’s Global Director of Artistry Daniel Martin served as the show’s creative director while SCAD’s student models received a masterclass in runway walking from Movement Director Emma Chadwick, whose resume features top brands like Saint Laurent, Gucci, Givenchy, Marc Jacobs and many more.
As spotlights settled on the multicolored carpet-turned-catwalk (designed by SCAD alum Trish Andersen) and students pressed their faces up against their dorm room windows for a glimpse, the high-fashion promenade commenced. A Western influence (shall we thank “Cowboy Carter”?) spread throughout multiple looks, complete with wide-brimmed hats, fringe and cowboy boots. Everything from tailored menswear to playful pattern clashing to billowing silhouettes graced the runway, positioning SCAD’s students as emerging designers to watch.
Ahead, see some of the standout senior and graduate designs from the evening.
