The NFL draft is one of the biggest events of the year in all of sports. It’s always a spectacle, spread out over several days, and includes performances, celebrity appearances, and lots of banter between teams vying for the same players. After each draft, there’s always an instant analysis for each team, and NFL analysts and insiders assign grades to teams based on how they drafted. But here’s the thing, grading a draft class accurately can’t happen for three years, that’s when players are truly acclimated to the league and progressing toward their potential.
That means that this year, the 2022 NFL draft can be accurately graded for each team. For the Washington Commanders, this was pre-Dan Quinn, pre-Adam Peters, and pre-Josh Harris, so bear that in mind as you read. CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco re-graded the 2022 NFL draft class for each team, and here’s what he said about the Commanders:
2022 Grade: B+
The Skinny: They had eight picks in the draft, and just one — third-round running back Brian Robinson Jr. — is currently listed as a starter. Just four are on the roster. They missed on first-round receiver Jahan Dotson — traded to the Eagles — and second-round defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, who is now with the Jets. Other than that, they got very little from this draft, although fourth-round safety Percy Butler has 18 starts the past two years. He will compete for time this year.
How I did: I was almost as bad as the Commanders because I thought this was a decent draft. I liked the pick of Dotson and quarterback Sam Howell in the fifth. Howell is now with the Vikings. I didn’t like the pick of Robinson.
New Grade: F
Remember, this was the Ron Rivera era. It’s not surprising that this is the new grade for that draft class, considering what happened with each of those players since the draft. Brian Robinson Jr. and Percy Butler are the two most successful players selected that year, and Butler isn’t even a starter.
Next year, when Prisco reviews the 2023 draft, it’s probably going to be just as bad. So be patient, Commanders’ fans, in two years he’ll review the 2024 draft, and we already know that it’s better than anything this organization has done in decades.
