Mel B Talks ‘Regal’ Wedding Dress, ‘America’s Got Talent’ and Fashion

Mel B has plenty to celebrate, and she wants her fashion to reflect that. “This year, I am 50, and I’m celebrating that and celebrating myself and my body at 50,” the Spice Girls singer told WWD.

Besides turning 50 on May 29, the British star will also marry her longtime partner, Rory McPhee, at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral in the summer and return to the judges panel of “America’s Got Talent” for season 20 of the show, which premieres on May 27. Mel B judged the competition from 2013 to 2018.

“I’ve been through a lot in this past decade, including an emotionally abusive relationship where I was so low and felt insecure and unattractive, and now I feel I have come into the light. So my dressing reflects where I’m at right now, and it’s a call out to let all women who have been through abuse know that you can heal, you can start to recover and you can find yourself again,” she said.

Mel B has been open about the emotional, physical and financial abuse she suffered in her previous relationship. Now, in a different phase of her life, the singer sees fashion as a tool of expression and healing. “It’s so important to feel completely in control of myself, from the way I look, to the place I live, to the people I surround myself with and the clothes that I wear. My clothes, paid for with my money and chosen by me,” she said.

A patron of the Women’s Aid organization, which fights to end domestic abuse in the U.K., Mel B received the Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for her services. The title allowed her to book her upcoming wedding at the exclusive St. Paul’s Cathedral, where Princess Diana married then-Prince Charles in 1981. “This will be a very formal, English wedding where I want to feel regal and very proper. All the ladies will wear hats or fascinators. Then, I’m having a second ceremony abroad, which will be more informal, sexy, and beautiful,” she said, adding that she will wear a different dress for each ceremony.

“I found an amazing bridal boutique called Evelie in London and in one incredible afternoon, I found two perfect dresses: one beautiful classic dress by Josephine Scott, a British designer and one stunning dramatic dress by a U.S. designer, Justin Alexander,” she said. “I’ve since had fittings in London and New York, so it’s a perfect blend of my love for Britain and America.”

The singer also confirmed her Spice Girls friends will be part of the wedding. “But I’m not going to tell you too much. You have to wait and see,” she said.

Before walking the aisle, Mel B will return to the “AGT” judges panel alongside Sofia Vergara, Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel. For the show, she packed vibrant looks and body-con silhouettes, favoring British designers like Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. “And I’m always going to wear leopard print and heels, that is my signature look,” she said.
