Personal accomplishments from NFL players off the football field often go unnoticed by fans. Other times fans may notice, but it gets a bit of a shrug because they don’t see how it matters in terms of game performance. I would argue that fans should take notice of certain things and realize they absolutely do impact on-field performance.
One recent example is Brock Bowers graduating from the University of Georgia. Sure, people get their degrees all the time. NFL players often go back to get their college diploma. But few are able to do what Bowers did.
He left school after his junior year to enter the NFL draft. Then he went on to have an historic rookie season, breaking a receiving record that stood for six decades, a rookie receptions record, and the Raiders franchise receptions record. All the while he was somehow continuing his college studies so that he was able to graduate ON TIME for a four-year degree.
“It was just [about] being able to finish what I started over there,” Bowers said of earning his degree. “And I knew after this year it’d be really tough to go back. Also, my parents kind of wanted me to go and finish up too. That was part of it.”
That’s an incredible accomplishment. Especially considering Bowers is unlikely to be needing his new degree in Business Real Estate anytime soon.
His accomplishment has another Raiders overachiever thinking maybe he should do the same.
“I got nothing but good things to say about Brock, and him getting his degree as well. It’s a really coolaccomplishment and something I plan on doing here soon, too,” said Maxx Crosby.
Crosby is known for being the hardest worker on the team and maintaining that title is important to him. Then in walks Bowers who went and did something Crosby hadn’t done. And if in one year in the pros, you can inspire Maxx to find another gear and hit another milestone, you’ve accomplished something.
Crosby spent four years at Eastern Michigan, so it’s possible he’s fairly close to completing his course work to be able to get his degree. Heck, at this point, they may ask him to be a keynote speaker too.
All this stuff matters. Not only are NFL players a different breed, but a select few of them are even in a class within the already elite class. Even if the actual degree won’t matter in terms of their career in football, the drive to finish what they started and feel the sense of accomplishment is what makes them great and keeps them reaching for the next level on the football field.
