The New York Giants are coming off a two-season nosedive that saw them win just nine of 34 games. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll got reprieves from co-owner John Mara this offseason but the pressure to win is on.
In a recent article, Judy Battista of NFL Media named the Giants the team that “most needs to show improvement.”
Owner John Mara has not given Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen a playoff mandate to save their jobs, but after two disastrous seasons, they have to start winning games. The Giants are confident that an improved roster and Russell Wilson will help them do that. But they face a brutal schedule — the hardest strength of schedule in the NFL — with an especially daunting first half, so even an improved team might not yield a vastly improved record. Then, the question will turn to rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart’s development and when the Giants might turn to him.
Schoen did well in free agency, making sure he filled all of the glaring holes on his roster, especially at quarterback and in the secondary. Last season, the Giants ran out of quarterbacks, and the ones they did play performed well below par.
This year, Schoen packed his quarterback room by re-signing Tommy DeVito, adding veteran free agents Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and then making a draft night splash by trading up for Jaxson Dart.
Schoen also fortified the secondary by signing safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Paulson Adebo in free agency.
The Giants face an uphill battle with 10 of their 17 games this season against 2024 playoff teams. The new additions, beginning with the aforementioned players plus a solid rookie class, could help Schoen and Daboll turn the tide.
Keep in mind, the Giants’ issue in 2024 was scoring and throwing deep. They scored over 20 points in just four of their 17 contests last year. They went 3-1 in those games.
